Procedure
Into a 100-mL 3-necked round-bottom flask purged and maintained with an inert atmosphere of nitrogen, was placed a solution of N-(4-(2-((2,4-dichlorobenzyl)(methyl)amino)acetyl)phenyl)acetamide (1.5 g, 4.11 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in methanol (20 mL). This was followed by the addition of NaBH4 (300 mg, 7.89 mmol, 2.06 equiv) in several batches at 0-5° C. The resulting solution was stirred for 2 h at 0-5° C. The reaction was then quenched by the addition of 5 mL of acetone. The resulting mixture was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was applied onto a silica gel column with ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (1:10-1:5). This resulted in 1.2 g (76%) of N-(4-(2-((2,4-dichlorobenzyl)(methyl)amino)-1-hydroxyethyl)phenyl)acetamide as yellow oil.
