Procedure
20 g (0.07 mol) of methyl 4-methylsulfonyl-3-fluoro-2-methylthiomethylbenzoate were dissolved in 400 ml of methanol, and 10.95 g (0.27 mol) of a 2N NaOH solution were added. The solution was stirred at RT for 4 h. The methanol was removed. The residue was taken up in water and acidified with 2N HCl. This was followed by extraction with CH2Cl2 and the organic phase was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to completion.
