To a solution of 64 (2.27 g, 6.4 mmol) in ethanol (60 mL) with acetic acid (1 wt. %) was added Pd/C catalyst (300 mg, 10% wet) then the mixture was shaken for 18 h at 30 psi of hydrogen in a Parr hydrogenator. The pressure was released and the catalyst was filtered off through a pad of silica gel. The solvent was removed at reduced pressure to provide 65 (1.3 g, 92%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.60 (br s, 4H), 2.00 (s, 2H) 2.55 (br s, 2H), 2.85 (br s, 2H), 3.47 (s, 3H), 3.73 (m, 2H), 4.10 (m, 2H), 6.82 (d, 2H), 7.08 (d, 2H).
