Procedure

A solution of the 10 g. of the product from Step B in 300 ml. of hot chloroform was treated with 100 g. of maganese dioxide. After 1/2 hour of stirring, the mixture was filtered and the filtrate was evaporated to dryness to give 9.2 g. of 2-methyl-3-hydroxy-4-formyl-5-benzoylthiomethylpyrididne, m.p. 127°-130° C.
