To chloroform solution containing perbenzoic acid prepared from 36.6 g of benzoyl peroxide was added, with ice-cooling, 6.6 g of p-allyltoluene dissolved in 20 ml of chloroform. The resulting mixture was allowed to stand at 5° C for 4 days and washed with 10% sodium hydroxide solution, water, Mohr's salt solution and then water, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated to obtain the residue, which was distilled under reduced pressure to give 35.3 g (yield 47.5%) of p-methylallylbenzene oxide as colourless liquid having a boiling point of 92° C/7 mmHg.
