25 g of o-hydroxyallylbenzene was dissolved in 100 ml of water and to the mixture was added 8g of sodium hydroxide. To the resulting mixture was added dropwise 25.2 g of dimethyl sulfate over a period of about 2 hours, while maintaining the temperature at 5° - 10° C. The thus obtained mixture was heated with stirring at 80°- 100° C for approximately 30 minutes, and then the oil layer was separated. This layer was distilled under reduced pressure, there was obtained 22.3 g (yield 81%) of o-methoxyallylbenzene having a boiling point of 51° C/2 mmHg.
