A mixture of 6.0 g (.021 mole) of ethyl 4,5-dihydro-4-oxothiopyrano[3,2-b]indole-5-acetate and 21 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide solution is stirred for 1/2 hour at 95° C. The clear solution is cooled, acidified and the solid filtered and recrystallized from isopropanol to give 4.9 g of product, mp 275°-278° C.
