Procedure

A solution of 140 mg of 2-[(4R)-4-acetylthio-2-oxoazetidin-1-yl]-2-oxoacetic acid methyl ester (crude product) in a mixture of 20 ml of methanol, 2 ml of methyl acetate and 0.4 ml of water is allowed to stand for 20 hours at room temperature, concentrated in vacuo and evaporated again with benzene. The residue is chromatographed over silica gel thick layer plates with toluene/ethyl acetate (2:1) and yields the title compound.
