Procedure

110.2 g (0.5 mol) of 3-(4-chlorophenoxy)-3-methyl-butan-2-one were dissolved in 500 ml of methylene chloride, and 83 g (0.52 mol) of bromine were added dropwise at room temperature in a manner such that continuous decoloration occurred. When the addition had ended, the mixture was subsequently stirred for 30 minutes, the organic phase was washed twice with 300 ml of water and twice with 300 ml of saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and was dried over sodium sulphate and distilled. 105.9 g (70% of theory) of 1-bromo-3-(4-chlorophenoxy)-3-methyl-butan-2-one of boiling point 115° to 118° C./0.1 mm Hg were obtained. ##STR811##
