Reaction Steps
To a solution of 4-diphenylmethoxy-1[3-(4-tert-butylbenzoyl)propyl]-piperidine (4.7 g; 0.01 mol) in ethanol (80 ml), sodium borohydride (0.4 g; 0.0105 moles) was added, and the mixture was boiled under reflux for 1.5 hours. Then the solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue dissolved in methylene chloride. The resulting solution was washed with water, dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent removed in vacuo to give an oil, which was crystallized on treatment with petroleum ether (b.p. 50°-70° C.). 4-Diphenylmethoxy-α(-4-tert-butylphenyl)-1-piperidinebutanol (3.8 g; yield 80.6%) was obtained, m.p. 129°-131° C.
