A solution of 37.5 g of 4B in 200 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was added drop-by-drop over 30 minutes to a stirred solution of 4.8 g of freshly hexane-washed sodium hydride in 200 ml of DMSO, the temperature being held at 30° C. Then 26.6 3-bromopropene was added drop-by-drop over 10 minutes, and the mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 5 hours. The mixture was mixed with 1 liter of cold water and the resulting mixture was extracted with methylene chloride. The extract was washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent was evaporated, to give 1-(2-propenyloxy)-5-chloro-4-methyl-2-nitrobenzene (7A), as brown solid, m.p.: not determined.
