Lithium shot (1.7 grams) packed in mineral oil (Lithcoa Corporation) was magnetically stirred with naphthalene (15 grams) in dry freshly distilled tetrahydrofuran (50 milliliters) for 16 hours at 25° C. in an argon purged amber sure-seal bottle equipped with a rubber septum. The resultant dark green solution was 2 molar in concentration as determined by titration with 0.1 molar hydrochloric acid and by size exclusion chromatographic analysis of the polymeric products obtained after reaction with multiblock component monomers.
