Reaction Steps
44 ml of ethanol are added at room temperature and with stirring to 43 g (0.28 mol) of 2-fluoro-2-chloro-1-methyl-cyclopropanecarboxylic acid. After the addition of sulphuric acid, the reaction mixture is refluxed for 16 hours. Excess ethanol is subsequently distilled off and the residue is dried and distilled under reduced pressure. In this manner, 40 g (79% of theory) of ethyl 2-fluoro-2-chloro-1-methyl-cyclopropane-carboxylate are obtained in the form of a liquid of boiling point 62-63° C./ 17 mbzr.
