p-(2-Acetyl-6-hydroxyundecyl)cinnamic acid (2.6 g., 0.0072 mole) in ethanol (30 ml.) is hydrogenated over 0.7 g. of a 5% Pd on charcoal catalyst at 1 atmosphere pressure and room temperature. The theoretical amount of hydrogen (0.0072 mole) is absorbed in 7 minutes. The catalyst is filtered off, solvent removed in vacuo, and the residue chromatographed on 45 g. of silica gel with 2% methanol in chloroform elution. The title compound is obtained as a colorless, viscous oil.
