To a solution of methyl 3-bromobenzenecarboximidoate hydrochloride (Step 1 above) in MeOH (10 mL) at 0° C. was added [2,2-bis(ethyloxy)ethyl]amine (1.74 mL; 12 mmol) in one portion and the mixture was gradually warmed to room temperature (overnight). The mixture was concentrated in vacuo, partitioned between CH2Cl2/1M NaOH and the layers were separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with CH2Cl2 (×2), combined organics were washed (H2O, brine), dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo affording the title compound as a light brown oil which was used directly for Step 3 below. LC/MS (method A) tR 1.25 min, m/z 315, 317 (M+H, Br isotopes, 4%), 223, 225 (M+H−2EtOH, Br isotopes, 100%).
