Reaction Steps

Trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride (0.55 mL, 3.4 mmol) was added to a solution of methyl 3-hydroxyquinoline-8-carboxylate (650 mg, 3.2 mmol) in pyridine (2.3 mL) and CH2Cl2 (13 mL) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature. After 3 h, additional trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride (0.55 mL, 3.4 mmol) was added and the reaction was stirred for an additional 18 h. Saturated aqueous NaHCO3 (20 mL) was added and the layers were separated. The aqueous phase was extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×). The combined organic phase was dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The resulting residue was purified on silica gel eluting with CH2Cl2 to afford 971 mg (91%) of methyl 3-(((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)oxy)quinoline-8-carboxylate.
