A mixture of (±)-phenylmethyl (2R,4S)-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-4-{[(methylsulfonyl)oxy]methyl}piperidine-1-carboxylate (200 mg, 0.46 mmol), and cesium fluoride (190 mg, 1.3 mmol) in dimethyl sulfoxide (2 mL) was stirred at 100° C. for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled and purified directly by silica gel chromatography (5% to 25% ethyl acetate in hexanes gradient) to give (±)-phenylmethyl (2R,4S)-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-4-(fluoromethyl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (85 mg, 51% yield). MS (EI) for C20H20F3NO2: 364 (MH+).
