A mixture of (±)-1,1-dimethylethyl (2R,4R)-4-cyano-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (65 mg, 0.20 mmol), acetonitrile (2 mL), and 4 M hydrogen chloride in 1,4-dioxane (2 mL) was stirred at 70° C. for 15 minutes. The reaction mixture was concentrated and dried to give (±)-(2R,4R)-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)piperidine-4-carbonitrile hydrochloride salt (50 mg, 96% yield); MS (EI) for C12H12F2N2: 223 (MH+).
