A mixture of 3,4-diaminobenzonitrile (2.0 g, 15.04 mmol) in 98% formic acid (35 mL) was stirred at 110° C. for 18 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to RT and concentrated in vacuo. The crude residue was washed with NH3/H2O (3×20 mL) and water (20 mL) to afford 1.63 g (75.8%) of 1H-benzo[d]imidazole-5-carbonitrile (90) as yellow solid: MS (ESI) m/z=144.2 [M+1]+.
