2-(6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-3-yl)cyclopentanone (700 mg, 3.05 mmol) was added to a solution of LDA (2.291 mL, 4.58 mmol) at −78° C. After stirring for 30 min at −78° C., ethyl carbonocyanidate (0.329 mL, 3.36 mmol) was added to the reaction mixture. The resulting solution was warmed to room temperature with stirring over 3 h. The reaction mixture was quenched with 1 mL of water, washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and purified by Biotage (Hexanes/EtOAc 2:1) to afford ethyl 2-oxo-3-(6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-3-yl)cyclopentanecarboxylate (764 mg, 2.54 mmol, 83% yield). LC-MS (M+H)+=302.2.
