Reaction Steps

To a solution of the product of part (i) (0.55 g, 1.15 mmole) in acetic acid (20 ml) was added 10% palladium-on-charcoal (50 mg) and the mixture was hydrogenated at 15 psi (103 kPa) for 4 hours. The catalyst was then removed by filtration, the solvent removed under reduced pressure, and the residue partitioned between methylene chloride and water. The organic phase was separated, washed again with water, dried over magnesium sulphate and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield the title compound as a foam, m.p. 60° (0.485 g, 94%).
