Procedure

The product from step (b) (7.0 g, 0.011 mole) was heated to reflux for 2 hr with a solution of sodium hydroxide (0.93 g, 0.023 mole) in 90% ethanol (100 ml). The cooled solution was concentrated in vacuo and the residue diluted with water and extracted with dichloromethane. The extracts were washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated. The residue was dissolved in ether and treated with ethereal-HCl to give the sub-title compound as the hydrochloride salt, a white solid (5.5 g) mp 89°-91°.
