Reaction Steps

To 20 ml of a chloroform solution containing 1.2 g of N-(2-cyclohexylsulfinyl-4-nitrophenyl)methanesulfonamide obtained in Example 3 was added dropwise 60 ml of a chloroform solution containing 3.9 g of m-chloroperbenzoic acid under ice cooling with stirring. The mixture was stirred for 3 hours. The reaction solution was poured into ice water, neutralized with a dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and extracted with chloroform. The chloroform layer was washed, in turn, with water and a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated to give the crude crystals, which were washed with ethyl ether and then recrystallized from ethyl acetate-n-hexane to give 1.1 g of N-(2-cyclohexylsulfonyl-4-nitrophenyl)methanesulfonamide as pale yellow crystals.
