Procedure
0.25 mol of the α,β-unsaturated nitrile from Example 5 is dissolved in 600 ml of methanol and 185 ml of liquid ammonia. After addition of 22 g of methanol-moist Raney nickel, the mixture is hydrogenated at 70° C. under 100 atmospheres of hydrogen for 3 hours. It is briefly heated under reflux, the catalyst is filtered off hot and the filtrate is then evaporated. The product can be further processed directly (see Example 9), or can be precipitated as the hydrochloride from diglyme.
