Procedure

6-Fluoro-3-(1-methylethyl)-2(3H)-benzothiazolone (299 g) was dissolved in conc. sulfuric acid (8750 g), and the resultant mixture was cooled to a temperature of -5° to 0° C. 98% fuming nitric acid (d=1.52) (94.68 g) was dropwise added thereto while keeping the temperature at 0° C., followed by stirring for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water (16 kg), and the precipitated crystals were collected by filtration. Crystals were washed with water and dried to give 325 g of 6-fluoro-3-(1-methylethyl)-5-nitro-2(3H)-benzothiazolone. m.p., 153°-153.5° C.
