Reaction Steps
A mixture of 56 parts of N-(3-nitro-2-pyridinyl)-2-pyridinemethanamine, 2 parts of a solution of thiophene in ethanone 4% and 400 parts of methanol saturated with ammonia was hydrogenated at normal pressure and at room temperature with 4 parts of platinum-on-charcoal catalyst 5%. After the calculated amount of hydrogen was taken up, the catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated. The residue was crystallized from acetonitrile, yielding 43.5 parts of N2 -(2-pyridinylmethyl)-2,3-pyridinediamine; mp. 134.9° C. (intermediate 14).
