Procedure
A mixture of 3-cyclopropyl-1-(4-fluoro-3-methoxy-2-methylsulphonylphenyl)propane-1,3-dione (5.4 g) and triethylorthoformate (4.8 g) in acetic anhydride (4.5 g) was heated under reflux for 4 hours. The mixture was evaporated to give 3-cyclopropyl-2-ethoxymethylene-1-(4-fluoro-3-methoxy-2-methylsulphonylphenyl)propane-1,3-dione (6.1 g) as a red oil, which was used directly in the next stage.
