Reaction Steps
A solution of 2-methoxyaniline (1.25 ml, 11.08 mmol) and ethyl ∀-formyl-4-methoxyphenylacetate (2.70 g, 1.1 eq) in toluene (20 ml) is refluxed for 18 hours. After cooling, the reaction mixture is diluted with toluene (10 ml) and then acidified with 10% HCl. After extraction, the organic phase obtained is dried over MgSO4 and then evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by chromatography on a column of silica (eluent: CH2Cl2) to give 1.96 g (54%) of compound 20 (Z isomer) in the form of a yellow oil which crystallizes from methanol.
