The general procedure of Example 2 was repeated except that 72 g (1 mole) of n-butanal and 2 mg of bismuth chloride were used instead of 70 g of crotonaldehyde and 3 mg of stannous chloride dihydrate, respectively to give 177.0 g of n-butanal dicrotyl acetal (R1 =an n-propyl group, R2 =a hydrogen atom and R3 =a crotyl group] (boiling point: 116° C./25 mmHg) (yield: 89.4%).
