Reaction Steps
A mixture prepared by adding 100 ml of a 4N solution of hydrogen chloride in 1,4-dioxane to 5.45 g of N-t-butoxycarbonyl-N-methyl-4-acetoxy-2,3,5-trimethyl-aniline [prepared as described in step (g) above] at room temperature was stirred for 3 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was freed from the solvent by distillation under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was triturated with diisopropyl ether. The crystals thus obtained were collected by filtration, after which they were washed with diisopropyl ether to give 4.36 g of the title compound, melting at 172°-176° C.
