4.51 g of 1-benzyloxy-4-[3-(1-pyrazolyl)prop-1-enyl]benzene were dissolved in a mixture of 25 ml of ethanethiol and 25 ml of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate, and the resulting mixture was stirred at 25° C. for 0.75 hour. The excess thiol was removed by evaporation, and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic phase was separated, dried over sodium sulfate, and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated, and the residue was chromatographed on silica gel using chloroform for the elution. The eluate was evaporated, whereby 3.5 g (86%) of 4-[1-ethylthio-3-(1-pyrazolyl)propyl]phenol in the form of an oil was obtained.
