Procedure
17 Grams of 4-formylcarbostyril, 18 g of N-acetylglycine, 7 g of anhydrous sodium acetate and 100 ml of acetic anhydride were heated at 110° C. to make a homogeneous solution, further the solution was refluxed for 1.5 hours. After cooled the reaction mixture, the reaction mixture was poured in a cold water and the crystals precipitated were collected by filtration. The crystals were washed with cold water, then recrystallized from ethanol-chloroform to obtain 10 g of 4-(1,2-dihydro-2-oxo-4-quinolyliden)-2-methyl-5-oxazolone.1/2-hydrate.
