Reaction Steps
0.022 mole (2.1 ml) of methyl sulphate was added at 30°-35° C. to a solution of 0.02 mole (7.7 g) of 5-(N-tosylamino)-2,4-dimethoxy-3-nitrochlorobenzene prepared in the previous step in 25 ml of a normal solution of sodium hydroxide. Stirring was continued for 15 minutes after completion of the addition. The expected product precipitated upon dilution of the reaction mixture with iced water. After thorough draining and washing with water, the product obtained was recrystallized from alcohol.
