Ethyl 2-amino-4-(2-furyl)thiophene-3-carboxylate (500 mg, 2.1 mmol) in formamide (4 ml) was stirred at 180° C. for 3 hours. The precipitate obtained by cooling the reaction mixture was filtered to obtain 5-(2-furyl)-4-hydroxythieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine (330 mg, 1.5 mmol) having the following physical properties:
