Reaction Steps

To a stirred and refluxing mixture of 21.5 parts of 2-(ethylamino)-1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethanone hydrochloride, 60 parts of ethanol and 75 parts of water is added dropwise a solution of 12 parts of potassium thiocyanate in a small amount of water. Upon completion, stirring is continued overnight at reflux temperature. Another portion of 4 parts of potassium thiocyanate in small amount of water is added and the whole is stirred for 8 hours at reflux temperature. The reaction mixture is concentrated. The product is filtered off and crystallized from a mixture of ethanol and water, yielding 10 parts (91%) of 4-(1-ethyl-2-mercapto-1H-imidazol-4-yl)phenol; mp. 251.7° C.
