Reaction Steps

1.0 g of platinum oxide was added to a solution of 31.0 g of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidone and 47.0 g of dodecylamine in 250 ml of methanol. The resulting mixture was then hydrogenated under a hydrogen atmosphere in a Parr hydrogenation apparatus at room temperature for 3 hours. After completion of the reaction, the platinum catalyst was filtered off, and then the solvent was distilled from the filtrate under reduced pressure to give an oily product. This product was purified by column chromatography through silica gel, eluted with a 20:3:1 by volume mixture of ethyl acetate, ethanol and triethylamine, to give the title compound as an oil. The Rf value of this product on thin layer chromatography was 0.34, using silica gel and a 20:3:1 by volume mixture of ethyl acetate, ethanol and triethylamine as the developing solvent.
