Reaction Steps
To ethyl P-methyl-2-nitro-5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenoxymethylphosphinate (1.30 g) in ethanol (10 ml) is added 5 % aq. sodium hydroxide (20 ml) and the solution is stirred at RT for 20 minutes. The ethanol is evaporated off; the aqueous solution is extracted with ether and the ether layer is discarded. The basic aqueous solution is acidified with dilute HCl and extracted with methylene chloride. The combined organic extracts are washed, dried and evaporated to dryness to give P-methyl-2-nitro-5-(2-chloro-4-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenoxymethylphosphinic acid (IX; R is NO2, R1 is CH3, R2 =R6 is H, W=X is O, Y is Cl, Z is CF3).
