Procedure
A stirred mixture of the diacid from Step C above (1.3 g, 0.0038 m), ethanol (30 ml) and resin catalyst (1.3 g; Biorad AG 50W-XB) was heated under reflux for 10 hours in an inert atmosphere, filtered hot, the solution allowed to cool, ice-bath cooled and filtered to yield ethyl 5-(2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolizine- 5-oyl)-7-carboxy-6-methyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrrolizine-1-carboxylate (0.73 g) as a white solid.
