Procedure

Cyanamide (0.2 g, 4.8 mmols) is added to a solution of 5-[[3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]methylene]-1,5-dihydro-1-methyl-2-(methylthio)-4H-imidazol-4-one (1.5 g, 3.9 mmols) and potassium tert-butoxide (0.5 g, 4.3 mmols) in ethanol (25 mL) and the mixture is stirred under an inert atmosphere and heated to reflux. After 2.5 hours the mixture is allowed to cool, and is then poured into water (200 mL), acidified with phosphoric acid, and stirred. After half an hour the product is filtered off, washed three times with water, and dried. Recrystallization from acetonitrile gave the 5-[[3,5-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]methylene]-4,5-dihydro-1-methyl-4-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl-cyanamide (0.7 g), mp 257°-259° C. (dec).
