Acetic anhydride (1.31 g) was added to a solution of 8,9-dihydro-7-[(hydroxy)(2-methyl-1-trityl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)methyl]-10-methylpyrido[1,2-a]indol-6(7H)-one (1.42 g) in pyridine (20 ml). After being stirred at room temperature for 6 hours, the solution was evaporated in vacuo. The residue was diluted with chloroform, washed with 5% aqueous solution of sodium hydrogencarbonate and brine, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. After the solvent was evaporated in vacuo, the residue was subjected to column chromatography on silica gel (5% methanol-chloroform). The fractions containing the product were evaporated in vacuo and crystallized from n-hexane-ether to give 7-[(acetoxy)(2-methyl-1-trityl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)methyl]-8,9-dihydro-10-methylpyrido[1,2-a]indol-6(7H)-one (1.3 g).
