For the cleavage of the acetal, 8 ml of 10% aqueous oxalic acid solution were applied to 50 g of silica gel and 2.1 of 6-chloro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-oxo-2-naphthaleneacetaldehyde dimethyl acetal were chromatographed on this mixture with methylene chloride as the eluent. There were obtained 1.7 g (98%) of 6-chloro-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-oxo-2-naphthalene-acetaldehyde.
