Procedure

0.78 g of ethyl (7,8-dihydro-5H-1,3-dioxolo[4,5-g]-[2]benzopyran-5-yl)acetate was dissolved in 20 ml of ethanol. A solution of 0.35 g of sodium hydroxide in 4 ml of water was added thereto and the mixture was stirred under heating at 60° C. The solvent was distilled off and water was added to the residue. The mixture was washed with ethyl acetate and acidified with 1N hydrochloric acid. After extraction with chloroform, the extract was washed with a saturated aqueous common salt solution and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. After filtration, the solvent was distilled off and the residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography (chloroform) to obtain 0.67 g of the intended compound in the form of colorless crystals.
