N-(2-Methyl-5-thiazolylmethyl)trimethylenediamine (18.5 g) was dissolved in 100 ml of acetonitrile, and 1-nitro-2,2-bis(methylthio)ethylene (16.5 g) was added. With stirring, the mixture was refluxed for 6 hours. After the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature. The resulting crystals were collected by filtration and washed with methanol to give 10.2 g of the desired 1-(2-methyl-5-thiazolylmethyl)2-(nitromethylene)tetrahydropyrimidine.
