Reaction Steps

1.23 ml of triethylamine and 0.36 ml of diethyl cyanosphonate were added, whilst ice-cooling and stirring, to a suspension of 370 mg of N-(2-nitrooxyethyl)amine nitrate and 500 mg of 5-(1-naphthyl)-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid in 50 ml of dry tetrahydrofuran, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. At the end of this time, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the residue was mixed with ethyl acetate. The resulting mixture was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride and then dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was then removed by distillation under reduced pressure, and the crystalline residue was recrystallized from ethanol, to give 367 mg of the title compound as colorless crystals, melting at 151°-153° C.
