Reaction Steps

Sodium hydroxide (1 N, 0.68 mL, 0.68 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of ethyl 3-[(E,E)-3,7,11-trimethyl-2,6,10-dodecatrienylamino]-3-oxopropionate (0.115 g, 0.34 mmol) in ethanol (2 mL) at 0° C. The resulting mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 5 minutes, then warmed to room temperature and stirred for 0.5 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into brine, acidified with hydrochloric acid (5%) and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with brine, dried, filtered and evaporated to afford the title compound (80 mg, 0.26 mmol, 76%) as a gum.
