Reaction Steps
To a suspension of 0.045 g (1.1 mmol) of sodium hydride in DMSO (2 mL) was added a 0.225 g (1.10 mmol) of trimethylsulfonium iodide as a solution in DMSO (2 mL). The mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 10 min then a solution of 0.100 g (0.537 mmol) of the above aldehyde in DMSO (1 mL) was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 h then diluted with H2O and washed with EtOAc. The combined organic phase was washed with H2O, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash silica gel chromatography to provide 0.056 g (52.1%) of 1-methyl-2-(4-oxiranyl-phenyl)-1H-imidazole as a yellow oil.
