A solution of 2.43 g 3-amino-4-(4-methoxy-benzyloxy)-thieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxylic acid amide (Example 18) was stirred 6 h in 20 mL trifluoroacetic acid with a drying tube. The reaction was concentrated in vacuo and then co-evaporated 3 times with toluene and 2 times with CH2Cl2 to give a yellow resin. This was triturated in EtOAc and filtered to give 1.88 g 3-amino-4-oxo-4,7-dihydro-thieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxylic acid amide trifluoroacetic acid salt as a yellow solid.
