A mixture of 143.4 grams of aluminum chloride and 351.6 grams of benzene was stirred at room temperature while 100 grams of 3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl chloride was added to the reaction keeping the reaction temperature at approximately 35° C. over a period of 1.5 hours. The mixture was then stirred for 3hours. The reaction mixture was poured into 500 grams of ice and stirred until all the ice dissolved. Water was added with cooling to give a homogenous mixture followed by extraction with 400 mL of ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed with brine, dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate and stripped to dryness to give 3,5,5-Trimethylhexanoylbenzene.
