A suspension of 4-(2-chlorophenyl)-5-cyano-4,7-dihydro-6-(trans-2-ethoxycarbonylethenyl)-2H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine (260 mg) and 5% palladium on carbon (110 mg) in ethanol was subjected to catalytic hydrogenation at room temperature for 5 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered through Celite and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent:hexane-ethyl acetate (1:1)) to give a yellow solid. The yellow solid was crystallized from ethyl acetate-diisopropyl ether to give the title compound (160 mg) as pale-yellow crystals.
