Reaction Steps
A mixture of α-phenyl-4-piperidineacetonitrile hydrochloride (0.05 mole), 1-fluoro-4-nitrobenzene (0.06 mole) and potassium carbonate (0.15 mole) in DMF (200 ml) was stirred at 50° C. for four hours. Water and DIPE were added. The mixture was cooled. The precipitate was filtered off, washed with water and DIPE and dried, yielding 11.6 g of (±)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-α-phenyl-4-piperidine-acetonitrile (intermediate 12, melting point 118° C.).
